An ambitious future for a website that averages 20 visitors a month. But perserverance is a perk of humility.
Who the hell even visits “websites” anymore?
I mean, I do, from time to time. But guess I’m just a sick puppy.
Well, my massive wave of allergies has subsided, so I can really focus in on advancing all of my various projects.
And one of them is one I haven’t really publicly announced, but if you’ve been poking around on my website, you’ve probably noticed things are changing. Obviously, there’s the creation of new comics and the various portals on the front page. We also had the closure of the store a while back. But the main idea I want to focus on is bringing back some of that 90s charm to my own website.
So, I don’t know the general age of the people visit my website (for the love of god, please be 18+), but an elderly man like me has a deep nostalgia for the world wide web of the 1990s. Every single website had it’s unique personality, despite the earliest versions of HTML and CSS being pretty lacking in features. That still didn’t stop people from making unique, charming and very personal websites. These days the Internet is centralized. The majority of Internet Surfers, if you will, visit like 15 websites daily and call it a day. They never really dig deeper. And to be honest, that’s fine.
The long and short of it is that my website, my YouTube channel, my art, and my comics most of all are not for “normies.” And I intend to keep it that way. So what if I don’t make millions of dollars producing Marvel-tier lowbrow slop? I’d rather produce western-made ecchi harem slop! (Grimm Girls Chapter 1 has been scripted, by the way. It’s gonna have shorter chapters and it’s gonna be black and white, so you may see it before year’s end.) But that’s besides the point.
I don’t want this to be a site to visit. More like a museum, or perhaps years after I’m dead and gone, an ancient ruin. I know that’s an absurd analogy for a digital format, but I think that’s the right approach to have. It can be so much more. Like… webcomics for example. Everyone knows what a webcomic is by now, but the medium has nowhere near reached it’s full potential in my opinion. It’s an extremely untapped market that flies under the radar. Do you know how many times I clicked “Random” on ComicFury and found a gem that no one’s read? Too many. That’s why I mentioned in an older video, the idea of a publishing company specifically targeting unique webcomic creators would be a good idea. But that’d take an absurd amount of money to get going. A pipe dream, but not one that’s beyond a proof-of-concept.
Anyway, I’m getting sidetracked. These blogs are sort of a place for my brain to take a shit to put it eloquently, but they’re also to update you on my various projects. So, before I give you my Website Revamp plans, let’s check in on my current projects. Doomsayer Chapter 23 is still in development and still likely to be finished on Christmas Day (little Christmas gift for ya), Broken Windows is being drawn and might end up being pushed back. I wanted to release it on Thanksgiving Day, but good lord, doing it in color was a mistake. I still want to put it out in color, but maybe on Chapter 1. There is the idea of hiring a colorist, but then again, are they really gonna gel with my style and, most of all, I’m a little bit tyrannical with creative control. That’s why all my music has been one-man-band projects. Speaking of which, I am working on a demo under the name of “Lowborn.” Gonna be a sludgy-doomy project, so my metalheads can keep an eye out for that. Grimm Girls is actually moving along pretty quick and I think it’ll debut in January with subsequent monthly releases. Thoughts & Prayers has had mixed reception (to be expected with a comedy), but I like it, so there. There’s a few one-shot ideas floating around in my head as well. There’s also this cut-paper/diorama/stop-motion short film idea that still hasn’t fully formed in my head as well. More on that next week. Videos? A comic review on Saturday and the Shorts have actually been helping the channel in terms of watch time and view count. I’m also thinking about taking another swing at Game Reviews, in a more one-game-in-depth approach, rather than my short-lived “Steam Library Spelunking” series. Oh! And I wanted to do a throwback drawing video too. That’ll definitely happen at some point in November.
Now as for the Website Revamp…
So, Number One would be the Art Gallery. I’ve disabled the page for the time being and I’m sorting through the images. I figure I wanted to keep what I consider “good work,” but then there’s still the aspect of wanting to see the evolution from the earlier stuff. So, it’s a matter of what to keep and what to throw out. I also want to split it into various categories, so if you only like one subject matter or concept I draw, you can see that only. I have it currently split into Creature Designs for all the fans of spooky stuff, Pinups & Erotic Art (18+) for all the gooners of the world who have an intense and passionate appreciation for the female figure, Comics which would just be another portal for all of my various series and inevitable one-shots, and Sketches which is pretty self-explanatory. I’m not sure if there should be more categories. Maybe traditional art? I did dabble for a short period with a bit of clay sculpting, but I ended up losing the few I made in a fire. There’s also some older 3D art I rendered in blender - very remedial, primitive stuff that I don’t think is worth showing, but it does exist. I do have some fine art paintings I’ve made, but I don’t think they’re very good and I haven’t painted in years. I don’t know, you guys tell me! The screenshot is sort of the basic skeleton of what I’m trying to do. (Desktop view, that is.)
As for other sections of the website, I think the front page could use a bit of rework. I’d like you to be able to click through to what you want to see ASAP. Not scroll all the way to the bottom to get to T&P. I know there’s the Navbar, but it’s a Hamburger menu on mobile. I think something like a scrolling gallery might be better. I’d also like to add an interactive element. Maybe not so much as a literal game (although the idea of trying to make a game has crossed my mind), but maybe something like fun quizzes or an ARG aspect, but now I’m getting ahead of myself.
Anyway, hope you enjoyed this week’s insane ramblings and it made your Monday suck at least 1% less! If you have any suggestions to improve the website and elevate it from digital archive to museum piece, let me know in the comments section. Have a blessed day, friends.
